SENSEi and how it compares

What is SENSEi?

SENSEi is a platform that turns any room into an interactive, adaptive multisensory environment. Projections on walls and floor, lights, sounds, bubbles, fragrances and physical materials are controlled by a single system that recognises the gestures, movements and touch of several people at once, responds in real time and can be guided by the educator from a tablet.

How is SENSEi different from a traditional Snoezelen room?

The traditional Snoezelen room is designed for individual, one to one experiences, mainly for relaxation, with separate devices controlled one by one. SENSEi keeps its wellbeing, regulation and personalisation, and adds interaction, learning and participation: it can be used alone, in a small group or with the whole class. SENSEi complements the Snoezelen room rather than replacing it. The table below summarises the differences.

How is it different from an interactive whiteboard, a projector or an interactive floor mat?

An interactive whiteboard or a projector shows content on a surface to be looked at, and an interactive floor mat works on a single plane. With SENSEi the whole room becomes the experience: several projected surfaces, lights, sounds and sensory effects respond to the bodies of several people at the same time, the educator adapts everything in real time and the system can generate progress reports. Children learn by moving, touching and collaborating, not just by watching.

Is SENSEi grounded in science?

Yes. SENSEi began in 2015 as a research project at the Politecnico di Milano and the activities offered in the system are designed and tested together with universities, schools and therapy centres, including the Politecnico di Milano, SUPSI, NTNU in Norway, the University of California, Berkeley and the Autism Centre of the Ospedale San Paolo in Milan. SENSEi supports the work of professionals and does not replace their assessment. Studies and publications are collected on the Research page.

Space and installation

How much space is needed? Does a room have to be dedicated, or building work done?

SENSEi takes up no space: projectors, sensors and computer are mounted on the ceiling and the projections use the existing walls and floor, with no building work or dedicated furniture. The room stays free and can also be used for other activities. Dimensions are flexible: from 10 metre walls down to 3×3 metre rooms for individual sessions. SENSEi has been installed in classrooms, assembly halls, gyms, calming rooms and even converted storerooms.

How long does installation take?

Usually one day. First we design the room and the technology setup with you, then we install, calibrate the system and train the staff.

Is an internet connection required?

No, SENSEi works offline: the system runs locally and the tablet connects to the room's network. An internet connection is only needed to download updates and new content, to use the linked online platforms and for remote support.

Does the room need to be dark?

Complete darkness is not necessary. Reduced ambient light makes the projections sharper and the experience more immersive: if the windows are very bright, blackout curtains are usually enough.

People and activities

What ages and which people is it designed for?

SENSEi is for everyone. It is designed starting from the most complex needs, such as disabilities and neurodivergence, so every activity works for the whole group and people with and without disabilities share the same experience together. The activities are designed for different age groups and needs: nursery and preschool for playing, moving and discovering; primary and secondary school for immersive and inclusive teaching; therapy centres and hospitals for regulation, rehabilitation and reducing stress and anxiety; adults and older people, for example in day centres and care homes, for wellbeing and stimulating memories; museums for experiences accessible to every visitor.

Is it also suitable for people with motor or sensory disabilities?

Yes. People can interact with SENSEi in many ways: through body movement, by touching the wall, with their voice, with the magic wand, with buttons and controllers, with badge cards or with accessible devices such as adapted switches. The educator can always guide the activity from the tablet, so everyone takes part according to their own abilities.

Is there a risk of overstimulation?

The experience is always under the control of the operator, who decides what appears, at what intensity and for how long. Brightness, volume and pace are adjusted from the tablet, and at any moment the stimuli can be reduced or stopped, a single wall can be used or a calm scene can be selected.

Which activities are included? Can you create your own?

SENSEi includes more than 100 ready-made activities for education, therapy and culture, linked to more than 10 content platforms such as YouTube, Wordwall, Google Arts & Culture and Wikipedia. With Eureka! teachers and practitioners create their own activities from more than 30 templates, adding images, texts, voices and content familiar to the people they work with.

Costs and purchasing

How much does a SENSEi room cost?

It depends on the configuration: on the number of interactive surfaces, from a single wall to as many as you need, and on the sensory modules chosen, such as lights, fragrances or bubbles. Every room can be expanded over time without replacing what is already installed, and schools and organisations can draw on public funds and calls for proposals for inclusion and educational innovation. We prepare a tailored quote after a demo or a site visit: contact us.

Can I try it before buying?

Yes. We organise remote demos, visits to a facility that already uses SENSEi and meetings with one of our sales representatives at your premises. You can also find us at the main trade fairs and events in the sector.

How can it be purchased? Is it certified?

SENSEi carries the CE marking and schools can also purchase it through the Italian public procurement marketplace (MePA). Alternatively, it can be purchased directly from us or through our resellers.

Training and support

Is training included?

Yes, training is included. The experience is guided from an easy-to-use tablet, from which intensity, pace and content are adjusted in real time. In the training we focus above all on how to choose and adapt activities to the specific needs of the people you work with, for educational, therapeutic or wellbeing goals.

What support is provided? What about updates?

Remote support is included and, if needed, we also intervene on site. The hardware is covered by warranty and the software has a perpetual licence: updates arrive automatically and are installed when the system shuts down.

Data and privacy

Does SENSEi collect data? Where does it go?

SENSEi recognises gestures and movements without wearable sensors: nobody has to wear any device. Session data, such as usage indicators and progress reports, is not put online and remains within the facility.
